How Many Grams Of Sugar Do You Consume In A Day?

Updated: Jun 6, 2023

Every day the average American consumes 22 teaspoons of added sugar, that's 88 grams!

I use to start my morning off with consuming some sort of pastry (maybe a donut or two, or a muffin). Then mid-morning to overcome my sugar crash, I might grab a Snickers bar and a 12 oz can of soda. For dinner, I'd have pizza (which is loaded with tomato sauce that has added sugar in it and white flour which is a simple carbohydrate that gets converted into sugar), and to top it all off, I'd finish a pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

I was consuming around 45 ++ teaspoons of sugar a day, that's 183 ++ grams. This was a typical day for me, not even a full-on binge day. WOW!!!

Just in a …

Starbucks blueberry muffin = 33 grams of sugar

Pint of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream = 92 grams of sugar

One 12 oz can of Coke = 39 grams of sugar

King Size Snickers Bar = 23 grams of sugar

Binging might have included my favorite… baking an entire cookie dough roll of Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies. Each cookie has 10 grams of sugar.

I easily ate 10 cookies in one sitting. That's a Whopping 100 Grams of sugar, in the cookies alone!

About half of that sugar intake comes from sugar-laden beverages. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends you not exceed 25 grams of added sugars a day, that's about 6 teaspoons.

I would argue that number is higher just but looking at my past numbers.
